My Favorite Artist :
This is your first "Sketchbook Addition." Sketchbook additions are like half projects in that they are intended as partial review AND partial reference. By creating a sketchbook addition you are practicing the creative devision of space on a page and recording information, practicing drawing and researching. It is important to make every addition a careful and well planned exercise so think about what you are going to say and how it will look in your sketchbook when it is done.
The Process:
- Prepare your pages
- Turn to the first "normal" page in your sketchbook and number it page "1" in the top, outside corner.
- Divide the page into thirds with vertical and horizontal lines (like the grid in a camera).
- Select a color scheme of at least three colors for your page from the tempera paints in class. It is generally a good idea to tint (add white to) these colors.
- Paint out the background information on your page using the grid you've drawn.
- Let the page dry or dry it using the blow dryer.
- Title your page "My Favorite Artist" at the top of the page or along the outside edge.
- Make the title of your page obvious.
- Make the title of your page visually creative
- Research your favorite artist and add the essential information to this sketchbook addition.
- Check out a book from the library or use reputable sources from the web to collect:
- Artist's date of birth and date of death.
- Country of origin
- Interesting details of the artist's personal life
- Professional information about the artist
- Where they attended school or got their training
- Other artists who may have inspired them
- What makes this artist's artwork exceptional or unique?
- At least one (more is better) photocopy of the artist's work
- Use Microsoft word or Google Docs to scale the pictures as you want them for your sketchbook.
- Use the color printer in the tech room or library to print your picture
- Explain why this artist is your favorite artist
- What is it that makes the work stand out to you?
- Is there something in your life that would influence you preference?
- Try to be very introspective and critical of the artist's work in this explanation
- Draw or sketch a "Master Study" or hand-made duplicate of the artist's work.
- You will likely need to grid, paint out, and number more that one page for all of this information.
- Add the page number(s) for this assignment to your Table Of Contents along with the assignment name
Assignment Turn-in
- Using Google Drive or another .PDF Scanner App, create a .PDF of all pages included in this assignment beginning with your Table of Contents
- Upload or save your .pdf file in your Google Drive Turn-In folder in the appropriate assignment subfolder if available.
- Rename this .pdf as follows:
- <YourName>_<Assignment>.pdf
- Example- JohnDoe_MyFavoriteArtist.PDF
- NOTE- In Google Drive you do not need to add ".PDF" when you rename the file
The Learning Goals:
(This is what the addition will be graded on at the end)
- Completion- Follow all of the directions and ensure the project is complete with titles, sub headings, all visual and written information.
- Density- Pages should be PACKED with information. So much so that a person should not be able to place a quarter on the page without it touching either written or visual information.
- Design- Carefully plan out your pages and specifically place items like titles, subheadings, pictures, and written information.
