The Assignment:

The midterm Exam is in the form of a "Portfolio Review." This means students are expect to collect their work, photograph it, and submit it to a file folder online. At this point in your art career you should have 8 works of art in your portfolio and ten good pages in your sketchbook. It is important to note the file types in which the two parts of the portfolio must take: Artwork is submitted as a .JPG file- this is likely the native file format that your camera uses. Sketchbook pages are assembled into a .PDF file- this often requires an additional step using a "scanner" app., if you are using your smart phone, or a .PDF printer app on a desktop or laptop computer.

Submitting your Artwork Images:

  1. Collect all of your artwork together in one place to allow for the selection process.

  2. Select from the artwork you see in front of you eight drawings or paintings that you think are the very best examples of your ability.

    • Try to select work in different media. Ex- Tempera on paper, graphite on paper, india ink on paper, mixed media, Collage, oil pastel on paper, etc.

  3. Photograph and crop your work to the best of you ability. For examples of photography and cropping, refer to the Portfolio Assessment Page.

  4. Upload the eight images of your artwork to the "MidtermExam" folder in your Turn-In folder on Google Drive. This is done the same way you have been uploading your work so far this year.

  5. Rename each of the eight files uploaded to the following: "YourName_Title" where you you change "YourName" to your name and "Title" to the actual title of the artwork.

    • Titles- Each work of art should have a title. This is just a name that you give your artwork. The best titles encourage further thought about the work but they may be any name you wish provided that the title is school appropriate. In Beginning Drawing and Painting we write the title on the back of the artwork chosen for our portfolios.

NOTE- Remember that these image files of the artwork must be .JPG files. You do not need to convert these to a .PDF.

Submitting your Sketchbook Pages:

  1. Select the ten pages in your sketchbook that have the highest level of quality, design, and density. This selection should show an even mix of writing (note taking, journaling, annotation, etc.) and imagery (collage, sketches, media experimentation, etc.).
  2. Photograph each page separately as to eliminate two-page spreads. You may fold out any page attachments (such as a color wheel or value scale) to show the full extent of the page.
  3. Crop the images of your sketchbook pages to eliminate any background that may interfere with the quality of the photograph.
  4. Convert the images of your sketchbook pages to a .PDF.
    1. Students may use "scanner apps" in their smart phones for this activity or the native scanner app in Google Drive if using an Android based smart phone.
    2. Students may also use a PDF printer such as Doro (a free download) to "print" the images to a .PDF file in much the same way a printer would print the images to paper.
  5. Upload your ten-page .PDF file to the "MidtermExam" folder in your Turn-In folder on Google Drive. This is done the same way you have been uploading your work so far this year.
  6. Rename you .PDF file to the following: "YourName_Sketchbook" where you you change "YourName" to your name.
  7. For examples of photography and cropping, refer to the Portfolio Assessment Page
